Analysis of the echolocation calis and morphometry of a population of Myotis chiloensis (Waterhouse, 1838) from the southern Chilean temperate forest Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Ossa,Gonzalo; Ibarra,José Tomás; Barboza,Kathrin; Hernández,Felipe; Gálvez,Nicolás; Laker,Jerry; Bonacic,Cristián.
Echolocation is characteristic of bats of the suborder Microchiroptera. Though recent studies of echolocation calis in Latin America have generated significant advances in knowledge about distribution, habitat use and ecology of bats, the recording and analysis of bat calis is barely known in Chile. As a first step in studies on the ecology of the endemic Chilean myotis bat (Myotis chiloensis), we carried out morphometric measures and analyzed echolocation calis in a rural site near Pucón (39°15'S 17°W) in the Araucanía Region of southern Chile. During January 2009, we obtained 22 records from captured and 75 records from fiying individuals. The analysis of calis in searching phase showed that the terminal frequency for this species is 43.4 ±1.2 kHz, with...

Astyanax aff. fasciatus Cuvier, 1819 (Teleostei; Characidae): evidences of a species complex in the upper rio Tibagi basin (Paraná, Brazil) Neotropical Ichthyology
Artoni,Roberto Ferreira; Shibatta,Oscar Akio; Gross,Maria Claudia; Schneider,Carlos Henrique; Almeida,Mara Cristina de; Vicari,Marcelo Ricardo; Bertollo,Luiz Antonio Carlos.
Four populations of Astyanax aff. fasciatus of the upper rio Tibagi (municipal district of Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil), had their karyotypes and morphometry analyzed. The cytogenetic data show the occurrence of distinct karyotypes (cytotypes), here named cytotype A, with 2n=48 chromosomes (6m+18sm+14st+10a), cytotype B, with 2n=50 chromosomes (8m+18sm+14st+10a) and cytotype C, with 2n=50 chromosomes (8m+18sm+14st+10a). The distribution pattern of the constitutive heterochromatin was very similar between cytotypes A and B, but diverged in relation to cytotype C. Distinct cytotypes may occur in sympatry in the upper rio Tibagi region, with the exception of the Furna 2 sample, which presents cytotype A exclusively. In addition, a specimen with 2n=49...

Biometric variability of goat populations revealed by means of principal component analysis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Pires,Luanna Chácara; Machado,Théa M. Medeiros; Araújo,Adriana Mello; Olson,Timothy A.; Silva,João Batista Lopes da; Torres,Robledo Almeida; Costa,Márcio da Silva.
The aim was to analyze variation in 12 Brazilian and Moroccan goat populations, and, through principal component analysis (PCA), check the importance of body measures and their indices as a means of distinguishing among individuals and populations. The biometric measurements were wither height (WH), brisket height (BH) and ear length (EL). Thorax depth (WH-BH) and the three indices, TD/WH, EL/TD and EL/WH, were also calculated. Of the seven components extracted, the first three principal components were sufficient to explain 99.5% of the total variance of the data. Graphical dispersion by genetic groups revealed that European dairy breeds clustered together. The Moroccan breeds were separated into two groups, one comprising the Drâa and the other the...

Comparative morphology of the mandibles of female polistine social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Silveira,Orlando Tobias; Santos Jr.,José Nazareno Araújo dos.
Comparative morphology of the mandibles of female polistine social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae). Diversity of mandibular forms in female polistines is explored and compared among 116 species of all polistine genera. Inferences about function are made and discussed based on observed form differences. Mandible length and width measurements are analyzed for a subset of polistine species plus two vespines and two eumenines. A variable expressing the ratio between these variables is also considered in morphometric analyses. The following mechanical interactions among mandible structural elements are highlighted: opposition and crossing of mandibles' apical teeth at the middle of the closing trajectory; shearing action of the apical teeth against...

Comparative morphometry of Fasciola gigantica (Cobbold, 1855) and Fasciola hepatica (Linnaeus, 1758) coexisting in Philippine Carabao (Bubalus bubalis) OAK
Narva, K.M.; Diaz, A.C.; Claveria, F.G..
Coexisting individuals of Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica in livers of slaughtered carabaos grazed in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat, Mindanao, Philippines were compared based on their body length and widest body width, body width at ovary level, cone width along the proximal end of acetabulum, the distance from the anterior body to the proximal end of the acetabulum; and the distance from the posterior end of the acetabulum to the posterior body end. Flukes were relaxed in phosphate buffered saline solution containing MgCl2 crystals, and were fixed in alcohol formalin acetic acid. In the four infected livers, F. gigantica was the dominant species (66.7-83.3%) relative to F. hepatica (16.7-33.3%). While F. gigantica was longer (16-39 mm), with...

Cranial sexual discrimination in hatchling broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Piña,Carlos; Larriera,Alejandro; Siroski,Pablo; Verdade,Luciano M..
Broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris) hatchlings present a consistent sexual dimorphism in their cranium shape and size. Male hatchlings have smaller crania than females. Using multivariate statistical analyses it is possible to discriminate sex in broad-snouted caiman hatchlings by their cranial shape with a reasonable efficiency. The understanding of sexual dimorphism of crocodilian hatchlings might be possibly improved by experimental approach considering, genetic and phenotypic variables such as incubation temperature and clutch of origin.

Distribution and morphometrics of Natalus stramineus from South America (Chiroptera, Natalidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Taddei,Valdir Antonio; Uieda,Wilson.
Morphometric and distributional data and some observations on the biology of Natalus stramineus Gray, 1838 collected in eastern Bolivia and in northern, northeastern, central, and southeastern Brazil are presented. All new records, combined with the records of the species from Paraguay and Mato Grosso, significantly change the known distribution of N. stramineus in South America. The specimens from northeastern Brazil (Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Bahia) are smaller than those found in the northern (Pará), eastern (Espírito Santo, São Paulo) and central regions of the country (Distrito Federal, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul). Natalus stramineus specimens from the three latter regions are about the same size, but are larger than those from Santa Cruz, Bolivia....

Evidence for the validity of Protatlanta sculpta (Gastropoda: Pterotracheoidea) Naturalis
Wall-Palmer, D.; Burridge, A.K.; Peijnenburg, K.C.T.A.; Janssen, A.; Goetze, E.; Kirby, R.; Hart, M.B.; Smart, C.W..
The genus Protatlanta is thought to be monotypic and is part of the Atlantidae, a family of shelled heteropods. These microscopic planktonic gastropods are poorly known, although research on their ecology is now increasing in response to concerns about the effects of ocean acidification on calcareous plankton. A correctly implemented taxonomy of the Atlantidae is fundamental to this progressing field of research and it requires much attention, particularly using integrated molecular and morphological techniques. Here we use DNA barcoding, shell morphology and biogeography to show that the genus Protatlanta includes at least two valid species in the Atlantic Ocean. Protatlanta souleyeti and Protatlanta sculpta were found to be separate species, with...

Evolutionary patterns of asymmetric genitalia in the beetle tribe Cyclocephalini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae) Naturalis
Breeschoten, T.; Clark, D.R.; Schilthuizen, M..
The evolution of asymmetric genitalia is a common and recurrent phenomenon in a wide variety of insect taxa. However, little is understood about the evolution of left-right asymmetry in reproductive structures. Since a better knowledge of it could have an important impact on the study of genital evolution, in the present study we investigate the phylogenetic and evolutionary patterns of asymmetric male genitalia in Cyclocephalini. We use a Procrustes distance based method for quantifying asymmetry. Analysis of 119 species belonging to 14 genera revealed a diverse array of asymmetries with a strong indication that asymmetries are more strongly developed in the terminal part of the aedeagus. Further, we find that asymmetries have evolved repeatedly within...

Het Dryopteris affinis-complex in Nederland Naturalis
Hovenkamp, P.; Hendrikx, B.; Roskam, H.; Winter, W. de.
With the help of flow-cytometric analysis of nuclear DNA content and morphology, we establish the presence in the Netherlands of two taxa of the Dryopteris affinis complex: diploid D. affinis subsp. affinis, triploid D. affinis subsp. borreri, and the hybrids D × complexa (tetraploid) and D. × critica (pentaploid).
